Our Top Tips for Helping Children Transition to Reading Longer Books: Building Reading Stamina

Reading is tiring! Help your child build reading stamina and transition to chapter books by doing the following:

  1. Take turns reading aloud together. Let your child choose if they want you to read one page or two. Then switch and you read one page, and they read two. For beginning chapter book readers, alternate reading paragraphs. As their stamina increases, take turns reading chapters.
  2. Set a goal and use a timer. Kids love timers so have them set one and gradually increase the minutes each session. They could also graph the minutes and write reflections in a reading journal. Journaling will help them engage more deeply with the story and the graphing shows progress over time.
  3. Make reading a part of your everyday routine. Your whole family can participate by stopping and silently reading their own book. Pre-readers can look at books and pretend to read, so they feel included and develop a daily reading habit.
  4. Break up the reading time. Have your child do a physical activity such as toe touches, jump jacks, bunny hops, or yoga stretches in between chapters.
  5. Celebrate Progress. Offer encouragement and specific feedback. You read 2 chapters all on your own. We'll have to grab another book in that series, as you'll be done this one in no time at all. Way to go! or I love that you were so into reading your book that you didn't hear me call you for dinner. What are you enjoying about that book? High fives, choosing the menu for a favorite meal, watch a movie based on the book, invite a friend over to have a book chat, or take a trip to the bookstore to get another book in the series are simple ways to celebrate progress.
  6. Remember: If you can read a word, you can read a sentence. If you can read a sentence, you can read a paragraph. If you can read a paragraph, you can read a chapter. If you can read a chapter ... you can read a BOOK!
